Liana Mihuț
Liana Mihuț ( IPA pronunciation : / miˈhut͡s /; * 1958) is a Romanian former table tennis player who became European double champion in 1978.
Career
Liana Mihuț achieved her first international successes at the European Youth Championships in 1974 and 1976, where she won silver in doubles with Ligia Lupu (1974) and Swede Eva Strömvall (1976).
She achieved numerous successes in the adult division in doubles with her standard partner Maria Alexandru . So she won the Romanian national championships in doubles in 1976, 1977 and 1978 with Alexandru, 1979 and 1980 with Éva Ferenczi . In 1977 she became the Romanian individual champion. At the Balkan Championships in 1975 she first reached the final with Lidia Zaharia, with Alexandru she won in 1976 and 1978, in 1977 she was second. Four times in a row, starting in 1976, she was part of the victorious Romanian women's team.
In her three-time participation in world championships ( 1977 , 1979 , 1983 ) she did not come close to medals. She was more successful at the European Championships . Here she became European doubles champion with Alexandru in 1978 by defeating the Hungarians Judit Magos / Gabriella Szabó in the final. In 1980 they were unable to defend the title. They lost in the final against Valentina Popowa / Narine Antonyan (URS) and came second.
In the late 1970s, Liana Mihuț took the name of her foster parents and then performed under the name Liana Macean . A few years later she married and was then called Liana Urzică .
After 1980 it no longer appeared internationally.
