Zoran Kalinić
Zoran Kalinić ( Serbian Зоран Калинић , born July 20, 1958 in Subotica , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav table tennis player . In doubles he is world champion and two-time European champion. Today (2006) he looks after the national team of Serbia.
National successes
Kalinić won the championship of Yugoslavia several times. In 1977 and 1981 he won the European Exhibition Cities Cup with the STK Spartak Subotica club - which he joined as a 13-year-old .
European championships
In 1976 he became European champion in junior singles and mixed (with Eržebet Palatinuš ) in Mödling, Austria . Between 1980 and 1996, he took part in seven European championships for seniors. In 1982 and 1984 he won the double competition with his compatriot Dragutin Šurbek . He repeated this success in 1994 with the Greek Kalinikos Kreanga .
World championships
Between 1977 and 1995 he took part in world championships ten times . He achieved his greatest success at the 1983 World Cup in Tokyo. Here he became world champion in men's doubles together with Dragutin Šurbek . At the 1989 World Cup he was vice world champion in doubles (with Leszek Kucharski , POL) - they lost against the Germans Jörg Roßkopf / Steffen Fetzner - and in mixed (with Gordana Perkučin , YUG). With the Yugoslav team, he won silver at the 1991 World Cup .
Later he took part in the senior world championships. He lost in 2004 in the individual final "over 40 years" against Mikael Appelgren . In 2006 he was again double world champion in Bremen with Thierry Miller (Switzerland) among the seniors "over 40" .
Other international tournaments
Kalinić won the Balkan Championships four times in singles (1980, 1982, 1983, 1985), three times in doubles (1979, 1982, 1991), five times in mixed (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985). He achieved the best placement in the Europe TOP-12 in 1982 and 1984 with 7th place each. At the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 , he was eliminated in the first round.
In 1993 Kalinić moved from Red Star Belgrade to the German club TTC Weinheim in the 2nd Bundesliga. He stayed here until 1995, after which he went to Austria.
Style of play
Kalinić is left-handed. He is holding the club in the Chinese penholder style. At 1.95 meters tall, he is one of the longest table tennis players in the world.
Private
Kalinić is married to Dragica. He has a son named Uros (* 1986). He studied economics.
