Gnaeus Pinarius Cornelius Clemens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gnaeus Pinarius Cornelius Clemens was a Roman politician and senator of the 1st century AD

Maybe Clemens came from Spain . Before the year 74, probably 72, Clemens was a suffect consul . From about 72/73 to 74/75 he was governor of Germania superior . For his successes in the Dekumatland on the right bank of the Rhine , he was awarded the triumph insignia . In 74 he had the so-called Kinzig valley variant of the Donausüdstraße expanded from Tuttlingen to Strasbourg , which shortened the route between Augusta Vindelicorum (Augsburg) and Mogontiacum (Mainz) by 160 km or seven day's marches.

“Whether the construction of this new cross-connection or other causes gave rise to a new advance into the Germanic area cannot be clarified. But the commander of the Upper German Army, Cn. Pinarius Cornelius Clemens, with his troops, which also included the 7th Legion brought in from Spain , launched a campaign to the Neckar in 73/74, which resulted in a gradual relocation of the border on the right bank of the Rhine. First a series of forts was built on the upper Neckar, which made the Hüfingen camp superfluous. A little later the Danube fort was moved to the Swabian Alb. "

Pinarius Cornelius grave inscription is (modern built) in the Umbrian Hispellum . Gnaeus Pinarius Cornelius Severus , suffect consul in 112, was probably his grandson.
