youth

Solopov started playing table tennis at the age of 11. He started as an attacking player, after a year he switched to defense. He won team gold three times at the European Youth Championships: in 1976 and 1978 with Estonia and in 1977 with the USSR. In 1978 he was also vice European champion in singles. Although he was originally an attacking player, he stood out in the defensive game mainly because of his enormous security - less because of his counter-strength.

Adults

1979 Solopov moved to the Estonian capital Tallinn . When he fell out with the table tennis officials of the USSR in 1985, he did not appear at international events for several years. In 1992 he made a comeback. As a result, he only competed internationally for Estonia. He qualified to participate in the 1992 Olympic Games and represented Estonia at the 1993 and 1995 World Championships and the 1994 European Championships.

In the early 1990s he stayed in Sweden regularly as a sparring partner for the Swedish national team.
