Richard Prause (born March 9, 1968 in Oberhausen ) is a German table tennis player . He was national coach for men from 1999 to 2010 and has been sports director at the German Table Tennis Association DTTB since August 2015 .

Career as a player

Between 1992 and 1997, the left-hander Prause played 38 international matches. His first international success was winning the international English championships in 1992 with the German team. In the European league he defeated the then number 8 in the world rankings Andrzej Grubba as 128th in the world rankings . That year he was nominated for the European Championship for individual competitions. At the European Championships in 1994 he won bronze with the German team, in 1996 he took 5th place.

He took part in world championships twice. With the team he reached 3rd place in 1993 and 5th in 1995. In the team tournament European Nations Cup he won silver in 1993 and 1995 respectively. With the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen club he won the European Nancy Evans Cup in 1996 .

Prause took part in the German championships several times . In 1993 he was runner-up in singles, in 1994 and 1995 he won the mixed title, each with Nicole Struse . With the TTC Grenzau he became German Cup winner in 1993, two years later he won the national ranking tournament DTTB TOP-12 .

Career as a coach

In July 1999 Prause was hired as a trainer for the German Table Tennis Association DTTB . Initially he worked as an assistant coach for the men's team. From October 2000 he was in charge of the German women's team as successor to Martin Adomeit . His debut as head coach was the team's victory in the Europa League against the Czech Republic in October 2000. In 2004, he replaced Istvan Korpa as national coach of the men. From summer 2010 to 2015 he worked at the Werner Schlager Academy (WSA) in Schwechat near Vienna , his successor as DTTB national coach is Jörg Roßkopf . Around 2013, in addition to his work in the WSA, he was coach of SVS Lower Austria . In August 2015 he became the sports director of the German Table Tennis Association DTTB , replacing Dirk Schimmelpfennig .

In 2007 and 2008 the Association of German Table Tennis Trainers voted him Trainer of the Year.

Private

Prause has been married since June 2000. He has two sons with his wife Susanne.
