The mini championships are an annual table tennis advertising event for popular sports. Children up to the age of 12 who do not yet take part in the official DTTB point game play in three age groups with girls and boys and should be interested in TT sport.

This event is organized by the German Table Tennis Association DTTB , the main sponsor until 2009 was the Federal Association of German Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks (BVR), from 2009 the ARAG Group . First of all, clubs, schools, kindergartens and youth leisure facilities carry out the local decisions in local tournaments in different age groups. The winners qualify one after the other for the district, district, association and federal decision. For the federal decision, the 20 most successful girls and boys in the association decisions in the age group ten years and younger are eligible to play.

The DTTB organized the mini championships for the first time in 1984. The DTTB's popular sports advisor at the time, Manfred Kucht, designed the concept. Since then, between 950 and 1843 local decisions have been made each year, in which 20,000 to 57,000 young people took part. Well-known winners were Kay-Andrew Greil (1984) and Bastian Steger (1990).

In 2006, the main sponsor BVR ended sponsoring the mini championships. TSP Tischtennis GmbH has been the new main sponsor since July 1st, 2010.

Trivia

  • On March 4, 1996, 506 young people from 20 schools took part in the tournament in Bremerhaven. This means a record number of participants up to this point.
  • This record was exceeded at the end of January 2003 when 656 participants competed in Hamburg.
  • In 2007, the millionth participant was registered in the local decision of VfL Zusamaltheim.
  • The current German mini-champion is Fabio Zeleci
