The TTC Rhön-Sprudel Fulda-Maberzell is a table tennis national league club from the Hessian city of Fulda . In the 2004/2005 season, the TTC was unbeaten and with a record of 40: 0 games won the championship of the 2nd Bundesliga South and made the promotion to the table tennis Bundesliga perfect.

Club history

As early as the mid-1990s, what was then SV Maberzell managed to establish itself in the regional league with a mixture of renowned, experienced players and local “youngsters”. In 1995, for example, the Danes Lars Hauth and Claus Pedersen were engaged .

Promotion to the 2nd and 1st Bundesliga

In 1998 they were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South and were able to establish themselves there successfully in the following years. The 1999/2000 season ended with an exciting final on the last matchday with promotion to the table tennis Bundesliga .

One year in the 1st Bundesliga 2000/01

Since the time of promotion (last match day) came very late and the financial possibilities were limited, the first season in the Bundesliga was not a good one. Nevertheless, the management managed to present a team suitable for the Bundesliga. The TTC was hit by bad luck with injuries early on. Both Smirnov and Ding Yi were injured and could not play the round. In addition, there was the resulting double weakness of the team (3:13). Many games were unfortunately lost 4-6. The first half of the season ended with 1:17 points in last place. The second half of the season started hopefully with a 6-4 win over TTC Jülich , but the problems persisted and at the end of the season TTC was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with 4:32 points.

2001–2004: 2nd Bundesliga South

Despite the relegation, top player Ding Yi was retained, the Chinese Sun, the Finn Valasti and the Norwegian Larsen, as well as Schneider and Kosler, two local players, joined the team. In the course of the season, a duel for the only promotion place between the TTC and the TTC Karlsruhe-Neureut emerged , which was only decided on the last day of the season in the direct clash of the opponents. The TTC lost 3: 9.

In the following year 2002/03, the TTC could not intervene in the fight for the promotion places and occupied a secure position in the middle. In the 2003/04 season, the TTC was defeated again in the battle for promotion places and at the end reached 2nd place. In the direct duels, the promoted TSV Graefelfing had the better end for themselves. In the 2004/05 season the promotion to the table tennis Bundesliga could be achieved. They remained unbeaten with a record of 40: 0 games.

For the 2005/06 season , Jan-Ove Waldner , who had achieved fourth place at the Olympic Games in 2004 at the age of 38 , was one of the most successful table tennis players of all time.

In 2007 , Jörgen Persson, a former world and European champion, was signed . Together with his friend Jan-Ove Waldner , a legendary couple played together, which was unbeatable in doubles on good days. On November 25, 2007, both won the double against Ochsenhausen within nine minutes with 3-0 sets. In 2008 , Fulda finished fourth, tied with Grenzau, and thanks to the better game difference - +6 compared to +5 - almost made it into the playoff round, in which the team was eliminated in the semifinals against Düsseldorf.

For the 2008/09 season you could win the young Swede Robert Svensson and last season's newcomer, the Chinese defensive specialist Wang Xi , while Jörgen Persson left the club for Lombard Budapest. For the first time they took part in the European Champions League and were able to qualify repeatedly for the playoffs in the next few years, but not advance to the final.

At the end of the 2011/12 season , Jan-Ove Waldner left the club after seven years.

Since the 2012/13 season , Fulda has been one of the biggest, albeit mostly hapless, competitors of the record champions from Düsseldorf: Four times in a row they made it into the cup final, in which Fulda was beaten by Borussia every time, in 2014 they reached the first at the end of the main round First place in the table, but lost the final against Düsseldorf, just like the following year. In 2015/16 , Fulda took the lead in the table on the last match day and finished the main round again in first position. In the play-offs this time they failed in the semi-finals against Düsseldorf. In 2016/17, the club was surprisingly eliminated from the cup competition in the quarter-finals against Mühlhausen , in the league it again lost the play-off final against Düsseldorf. In the following season Fulda only won six of the first ten games and was temporarily only in sixth place in the table, but was then able to win all the other games and thus still reach second place. The play-off semi-finals were lost to Ochsenhausen, however, and the second round of the cup against Werder Bremen .

For Jonathan Groth, Tomislav Pucar came for the 2018/19 season , but the start of the season failed again with four wins from eleven games, and despite a subsequent 8: 1 series, the play-offs were missed for the first time since 2013 with fifth place. After more than ten years, Wang Xi left the club after this season and was replaced by 18-year-old fan Bo Meng . The 2019/20 season, which was canceled prematurely, ended in tenth place - the worst position since promotion - after which Quadri Aruna and Lam Siu Hang were signed for Pucar . Thomas Keinath is leaving the club for the 2020/2021 season and moving to TTC Champions Düsseldorf in the 3rd Bundesliga North.
