Post SV Mühlhausen 1951 e. V. is a table tennis club from Mühlhausen in Thuringia .

history

The club was founded in 1951 as the Post Mühlhausen company sports club.

The most important section was table tennis as a competitive and competitive sport. The active players ensured with success that Mühlhausen developed into a stronghold of table tennis. Heinz Schneider in particular celebrated national and international successes. These included the bronze medal in the individual at the 1957 World Championships in Stockholm, his triple victory at the All-German Championships in 1951/52 and a total of 16 GDR championship titles.

By purchasing the sports hall at Kristanplatz, the training and competition conditions could be improved. The association has 160 members, including 73 children and young people.

As a performance base of the Thuringian Table Tennis Association , top-level sporting aspects are also considered. The training of young athletes to become federal cadres are medium-term goals. The promotion of the 1st men's team to the 2nd Bundesliga took place at the end of the 2007/08 season. The Bundesliga reserve competes in the upper league, the first women's team is currently one of the top representatives in the TTTV regional league. Another seven men's and junior teams play within the Free State.

In the 2012/13 season the club won the 2nd Bundesliga South and was promoted to the table tennis Bundesliga for the first time . In the following season he could only reach the ninth of ten places and thus one of the two relegation ranks there - before SV Plüderhausen - but did not descend because only the second division club TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt had applied for a license for the first division. Also in the 2014/2015 season it was not possible to earn a non-relegation place, this time they even came last. Once again, however, only one team - ASV Grünwettersbach - applied for promotion to the first Bundesliga, while eighth-placed TTC Frickenhausen left the league for financial reasons, so Mühlhausen was able to keep the class. Reinforced by Ovidiu Ionescu , who previously played for TTC Hagen , he finally managed to reach 8th place in 2016 and thus stay in the league. The club had a decisive influence on the playoff positions on the last matchday by winning 3-2 at TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt, which was in 4th place, so that it fell back to 5th place behind the eventual champions Borussia Düsseldorf . For the 2016/17 season , Mühlhausen strengthened itself with Daniel Habesohn from the reigning European team champion Austria. With him, the team beat ASV Grünwettersbach and TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell just 3: 2 in the cup competition and qualified for the first time for the Final Four in Ulm. There the semi-finals were lost against Saarbrücken, in the league Mühlhausen reached seventh place.

After Lars Hielscher had ended his professional career, Lubomír Jančařík was signed for the 2017/18 season . In the second round of the cup, Mühlhausen was surprisingly defeated by the second division TTC indeland Jülich , but started the Bundesliga season with five wins from six games and was thus in the playoffs for the first time in the club's history, even in first place on the first day of the game. In the remaining two-thirds of the season, however, only three more victories were achieved - there were six defeats in a row from the 12th to the 17th matchday - so Mühlhausen was sixth in the end. For the next season , in which Mühlhausen also competed in the Champions League for the first time , Steffen Mengel joined the club. The Champions League quarter-finals were reached straight away, but were lost to KNT UGMK after 2: 3 and 3: 2 and 20:20 sets due to a ball difference that was 12 points worse. In the Bundesliga, Mühlhausen played a strong preliminary round and was temporarily in second place with eight wins out of ten games, but only won three more games in the second half and thus ended the season again in 6th place.

The 2019/2020 season started with average performance. Thanks to strong performances in the second half of the season, including the first win against the record champions Borussia Düsseldorf, the team retained the chance of their first participation in the playoffs of the table tennis Bundesliga until matchday 20. Due to the clear away defeat against TSV Bad Königshofen (0: 3) and the simultaneous victory of SV Werder Bremen, there was only a small mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs. On matchday 21, the team around top player Ovidiu Ionescu, who was substituted on at break, managed to turn a 0-2 deficit against direct competitor TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt and thus secure 5th place and the best placement in the club's history. In the Champions League, they reached the quarter-finals in their second year. But here they were eliminated against 1. FC Saarbrücken TT after two defeats (2: 3; 1: 3).
