The 2017/18 Bundesliga was the 52nd season for men and the 43rd season for women in the top German table tennis division . Champions were Borussia Düsseldorf and SV DJK Kolbermoor .

Men

The men's season began on August 19, the main round ended on March 29, 2018. The TTC drawbridge Grenzau , ninth in the preseason, did not have to relegate due to the decision to increase the league to 12 teams. The TSV Bad Königshofen increased the number of teams is the only climber only 10. The top four teams after the regular season participated in the play-off part -Runden to determine the German champion. Only the TTC indeland Jülich wanted to move up from the second division , which secured the eighth place it needed on the last match day and thus increased the TTBL to eleven teams.

Season course

Top of the table

Mühlhausen, Düsseldorf, Bremen and Saarbrücken all won their first three games, so Mühlhausen was in first place on the first matchday, but was then replaced by Düsseldorf, which did not give up this position until the end of the season. From the 7th matchday on, Düsseldorf's lead over the runner-up was always 4 points, only after the 15th matchday Fulda came close to 2 points.

Battle for the play-off places

In addition to Saarbrücken, Ochsenhausen and Fulda, who had occupied the other play-off places last season , Bremen and, surprisingly, Mühlhausen , who were strengthened by Omar Assar , had good chances of making it to the top for a long time. Mühlhausen won five of the first six games - the four home games against Fulda, Bremen, Grenzau and Ochsenhausen clearly 3-0 - and thus as many games as in the entire last season. In the remaining two thirds of the season, however, only three more wins, so that Mühlhausen fell back to sixth place after the 12th matchday and spent the rest of the season there. After the 11th matchday, Bremen was still in second place with eight wins, but then only won one game, so that after the 16th matchday there were hardly any chances of a play-off place and in the end 6 points between the 4th . and 5th place. Fulda fluctuated for a long time between places 4 and 5 and even fell back to 6th place after the 10th matchday. After that, however, no more games were lost, so that the club made up four places within four match days and ended up just behind Düsseldorf. After losing three games in a row, Ochsenhausen first had to catch up in order to get close to the play-off ranks, but the team was only able to establish itself there after the 13th matchday, never getting past third place. After Düsseldorf, Saarbrücken was the team that spent the longest time in the top four places; With four wins from the first four games, the foundation stone was laid, after which they only fell back to places 5 and 6 for a total of three game days.

End of table

Unlike in previous seasons, Bergneustadt was unable to play for the play-offs this time; four defeats from the first four games formed a bad starting position, so that the club was only in seventh place for two game days, otherwise in ranks 8 or 9. Grünwettersbach was heavily dependent on top player Masataka Morizono , without whom not a single victory was achieved. In addition, six games were just lost 3-2, more than at any other club. The whole season the team was between 6th and 8th place without getting close to the play-offs. Bad Königshofen did surprisingly well, especially thanks to an unexpectedly strong Darko Jorgić, and scored five wins over the course of the season. In the meantime, they were in 7th place, but in the end it was only enough for 9th place. Grenzau parted ways with top player Kou Lei after the 10th match day , who had reported sick for the game but at the same time took part in a tournament in Oman and was able to after that no further game win, so that they finally took last place beaten.

Women

The women's season began on September 2, the main round ended on April 10, 2018. The clubs TUSEM Essen , TTV Hövelhof and LTTV Leutzscher Füchse 1990 had withdrawn after the 2016/17 season , while only the TTK Anröchte wanted to advance, so the Bundesliga only consisted of seven teams. Therefore, a play-off round was decided in which the six first-placed teams of the main round took part. Second division TSV Langstadt 1909 increased the number of teams as the only promoted team to eight for the next season.
