The Museu Nacional de Antropologia is a state museum of anthropology in central Luanda , Angola . Its task is to research, collect, catalog, preserve and disseminate the country's anthropological cultural assets.

history

The present museum building with 14 rooms on two floors was built at the end of the 18th century by a Portuguese noble family who were involved in the slave trade. The slaves were housed in the two inner courtyards until they were transported overseas. It later became the headquarters of the Angolan diamond company Endiama . One year after Angola's independence, the museum was inaugurated on November 14, 1976. The building was classified as a Historic Heritage Site in 1981.

collection

The collection items come from the different ethnic groups in the country: Bakongo , Ovimbundu , Ambundu , Lunda - Chokwe , Ngangela , Nhaneca-Humbe , Herero , Ovambo and Kung . They are objects from their everyday life that were handmade in the most ancient times: buckets, bowls, funnels, drinking bowls, pumpkins to turn milk into yogurt or an ox horn to transmit sounds, all of which were used by the shepherds in the southeast agriculture such as hoes, axes, baskets, sieves, stone mortars and wooden pestles, which were used by women to grind food, from the field of metallurgy melting furnaces for iron casting, hammers, tongs, arrowheads and ax, objects from the weaving mill Hunting and fishing as well as ceramics production, cultural collection items include musical instruments such as drums and xylophones as well as colorful wooden masks and religious cult objects.

cooperation

In December 2018, the Anthropological Museum in Luanda agreed on a cooperation with the Ethnological Museum in Berlin and the Goethe-Institut in Angola. The first joint project is the digitization of the 6000- piece evidence object . On June 17, 2019, during a visit by the President of the German Federal Council, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation presented the museum's library with 33 valuable specialist books, including the work “Cultura tradicional Bantu” by Raul Ruiz de Asúa Altuna.
