history

The museum is housed in a 9600 m² former soap factory, which is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Its historic facade has been extensively restored and the interior has been converted into modern museum halls. The construction contract went to the Portuguese construction company Soares da Costa in 2005 . Construction began in 2010 under the direction of the Brazilian architect Yuri Vasconcelos. During the visit of the Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos in 2015 it was announced that the construction was 98% complete. Shortly afterwards, however, the work was interrupted for financial reasons and only started again in March 2020. It is scheduled to open in the course of 2021.
