history

Boeing 707-330 of Air Zimbabwe, the former D-ABUB of Lufthansa

The story of Air Zimbabwe began in 1967 with the establishment of Air Rhodesia after Central African Airways was dissolved. In 1978, it became Air Zimbabwe Rhodesia renamed and in 1980 it was due to the independence of Zimbabwe Air Zimbabwe . From February 1981 to June 1982 the company took over 5 Boeing 707-330 from Lufthansa . Air Zimbabwe bought the cargo airline Affretair in 1983 and was privatized in 1997 .

In 2003, Air Zimbabwe ran into massive financial problems, which led to its temporary suspension by the IATA in February 2004. In May 2005, the airline made headlines as it made the maiden flight on the new route from Dubai to Harare with just a single passenger. The government of Zimbabwe criticized the company for setting up the new route without a performance audit.

In May 2011, Air Zimbabwe was again suspended by the IATA due to outstanding liabilities amounting to 2 million US dollars, and thus all international financial transactions and booking services were suspended until further notice. The company's three Boeing 737-200s had previously been shut down by the Zimbabwe Aviation Authority for safety reasons. These were to be replaced by a Boeing 737-500 leased from Zambezi Airlines , but Air Zimbabwe was unable to pay the leasing installments and had to return the aircraft.

In the summer of 2011, Air Zimbabwe introduced a modernized version of its aircraft livery on a Boeing 767-200ER.

In September 2011, flight operations had to be suspended for a short time because of legal disputes with the pilots, which have since been resolved. In November of the same year, numerous flights were repeatedly canceled because payments to suppliers of kerosene were outstanding. In December 2011, a Boeing 767-200ER of the heavily indebted company was confiscated in London as collateral for unpaid bills. In January 2012, the suspension of flights to London and Johannesburg was announced due to the financial situation. There is also the risk that more aircraft will be confiscated. In February 2012, flight operations were finally completely suspended until further notice. After brief, unsuccessful attempts to start flight operations, Air Zimbabwe has been operating regular flights again since November 2012.

In February 2014, the suspended boss Innocent Mavhunga, his predecessor Peter Chikumba and the managing director Grace Nyaradzo Pfumbidzayi were arrested on suspicion of fraud, and other managers were suspected. They are said to have cheated the airline financially. In July 2017, the airline laid off almost half of its 424 employees.

Since October 2018, the privatization of Air Zimbabwe has been driven forward, while a new state-owned airline is being created at the same time as Zimbabwe Airways .

On October 24, 2019, the use of the South African airports by the local airport operator ACSA was banned due to outstanding payment and the only machine in operation was arrested. Operation has been permitted again since October 28, 2019.
