Angola International Airport ( Portuguese : Aeroporto Internacional de Angola ) is the future name of the major airport in the Angolan capital Luanda, which has been under construction since 2004 . It is located 40 km from Luanda, in the territory of the municipality of Bom Jesus in the province of Bengo . The previous construction costs, which are fully pre-financed by the People's Republic of China , were officially US $ 6.4 billion (as of 2018). After construction errors and quality defects were found, the opening was postponed until 2022.
prehistory
Since the end of the civil war in 2002, Angola has experienced rapid economic growth. In order to cope with the increasing business activity with the whole world and to secure the drastic increase of the logistics networks in Angola, the construction of a new and large international airport was inevitable.
The project
The area of the ultra-modern passenger terminal is to take up 160,000 square meters, the area of the cargo terminal will be 6200 square meters and should have a capacity of 600,000 tons of cargo handling per year. Two runways will be built. The north runway will be 3800 meters long, while the south runway will be 4000 meters long; both measure 60 meters and 75 meters in width.
It is assumed that the total area of the airport is at least 50 square kilometers, not including other additional infrastructure such as shops, hangars, restaurants, offices and the construction of a hotel near the airport. The project also includes the construction of a rail link to the capital, the province of Luanda and possibly to the neighboring province of Malanje . In order to enable regulated access from (and departure to) Luanda by road, the existing interurban road, which leads from Luanda via Viana to the east, has to be expanded considerably, since with its current width on the route to Viana there is mostly traffic jam during the day and must be driven in step.
The project is being carried out almost exclusively by Chinese workers, which is why there were protests from the local population when construction began. There were occasional riots because the police and the military used bulldozers to secure evictions from illegally established hut settlements. The Angolans see themselves at a disadvantage compared to the Chinese and demanded to be involved in the construction work.
Opening in 2022
The opening of the new airport has been postponed several times for financial reasons. Originally planned for 2015/2016, it was supposed to open in 2017 at the latest, then in 2020. But this date could not be realized either. It is now passenger boarding bridges . The construction companies are a consortium of Chinese construction companies led by the China International Fund (CIF), founded in Hong Kong in 2003, and the Brazilian organization Odebrecht . Due to the construction errors and quality defects in the material, the construction company CIF was replaced by the Chinese company AVIC . For the project, the Chinese have built a new, large-scale housing estate for workers and material depots east of Viana . Her name is Vila Chinesa .
assumed that it will be fully functional after 2022 , after the construction work should be completed in 2022. The new airport should be designed for a passenger volume of 15 million passengers per year and be provided with 31Web links
