David Mendes (lawyer)

Manuel David Mendes (born May 6, 1962 in Cazenga , Luanda Province , Portuguese West Africa ) is an Angolan lawyer , human rights activist and politician. He is one of the best-known activists in Angolan civil society and is also known as the “advocate for the poor” because of his commitment to combating state corruption. Among other things, Mendes heads the Angolan human rights NGO Mãos Livres (Free Hands) and with the help of it sued the Angolan state in various corruption cases.

He received the Martin Luther King Prize from the US Embassy in Luanda for his work and services to Angolan civil society .

Mendes is married and has seven children.
