Nocal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nocal is a beer brand from Angola . The brand name is the acronym of his brewery , the Nova Empresa De Cervejas De Angola . The brewery has been based in the capital Luanda since it was founded in 1958 and is now part of the Cuca BGI Group.

Numbers and Products

With a market share of around 16%, Nocal is the second most popular Angolan beer after the traditional market leader Cuca. In 2010, around 1.4 million hectoliters of Nocal beer were already being produced, and the trend is growing rapidly.

Nocal is offered as a light Pilsener and as a dark Nocal Black , both with an alcohol content of 5%.

They are available in 500 ml cans and 300 ml bottles. The Pils is also available as a mini , an easy-to-open 25cl bottle that is based on the successful model of the Super Bock mini from Portugal, which was introduced in 2009 . Nocal is also available as a draft beer .

history

The brewery was founded in 1958 in the capital of what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola, following the success of the Cuca brewery, which also opened in Luanda in 1952 . Nocal also found many friends in booming Angola, which, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, showed considerable economic growth and rising population figures, not least due to increasing immigration from Portugal.

The Italian director Ettore Scola shot his successful comedy Riusciranno i nostri eroi a ritrovare l'amico misteriosamente scomparso in Africa? , in which vices of the Nocal brewery can be seen several times and are prominently used in a chase scene.

Even during the Portuguese colonial war (1961–1974), Cuca and Nocal were very popular beer brands. The soldiers, who often came from rural areas of Portugal, were more used to wine and often found their way to beer here. To this day, for veterans in Portugal, the Nocal and Cuca beers are striking memories from their time in Angola.

After Angola's independence in 1975, all four of the country's large breweries were nationalized and integrated into the state-owned beer company Empresa Nacional de Cervejas de Angola , founded in 1980 , alongside Nocal and Cuca from the capital, EKA from Dondo and Ngola in Lubango .

In the course of the market economy restructuring in the country and the economic upswing after the end of the Angolan civil war in 2002, the government decided in 2005 to privatize the four breweries in the country.

The French Castel BGI then took over the Nocal and Cuca breweries in 2007 and has been running them since then in its subsidiary Cuca BGI.

Sporting commitment

The sports club Grupo Desportivo da Nocal (GD Nocal) was founded in 1963 as a works team for the Nocal brewery, during the Portuguese colonial administration. In 2008 the brewery separated from the association and dissolved it.

The men's soccer team rose to the top division of the country, the Girabola , in 1992 . The 1992 season ended on a relegation zone, but was allowed to compete again in the 1993 season, as the regular promoted both came from the destroyed Huambo and could not participate in the league in the middle of the civil war. At the end of the season, GD Nocal was relegated.

The basketball department was more successful, especially that of the women. They won the Angolan championship in 1998 and were second in 1999. In 1997, the Nocal women basketball players finished third in the FIBA Africa Women's Clubs Champions Cup , the highest FIBA Africa club competition for women.

DG Nocal was also an important name in the country's chess.
