Salto is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Montalegre . 1429 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

Salto Church

history

The place was first mentioned in the late 6th century, as a Christian community under the Suebi . D.Afonso Henriques built a hostel for pilgrims in Salto in 1136 . D.Pedro I , whose episode with Inês de Castro is deeply anchored in the consciousness of the country, gave Salto to the monastery of Santa Senhorinha de Basto in 1360 .

In 1995 Salto was elevated to a vila (small town).

Culture and sights

The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Salto (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pranto ) made of granite is a listed building.

In a small, old manor house ( Casa do Capitão ) is a branch of the ecological museum Ecomuseu de Barroso of Montalegre, which deals with the ecosystem of the Serra de Barroso , traditional handicrafts of the district, and the history of the tungsten mines in Borralha .
