Pitões das Júnias (often simply Pitões ) is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Montalegre . 161 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

The ruins of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria das Júnias monastery

history

Originating from the dissolved old community of São Vicente do Gerês , the place goes back further, to the Mosteiro de Santa Maria das Júnias monastery founded here in the 9th century . In the course of the Restoration War, the place suffered several looting by the Spanish invaders, especially in 1665 , but remained Portuguese after its further bitter resistance.

Culture and sights

The ruins of the ruined monastery, a waterfall, and the chapel Capela de São João da Fraga are in the parish. A branch of the ecological museum Ecomuseu de Barroso from Montalegre is also set up here.

Pitões das Júnias is located in the Peneda-Gerês National Park .
