Acácio da Silva
Acácio da Silva Mora (* 2. January 1961 in Montalegre , Portugal ) is a former Portuguese professional - cyclist who was active from 1982 to 1994.
Athletic career
During this time he won stages in the Tour de France , the Giro d'Italia , the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de Romandie, the Tirreno-Adriatico, Critérium du Dauphiné, Tour du Luxembourg and numerous other tours. In each of the Tour de France editions from 1987 to 1989 , he won a stage. After his stage victory in Luxembourg in 1989, where he spent his childhood as a child of Portuguese immigrants, he wrote Portuguese cycling history. As the first and to date only Portuguese racing driver, he wore the yellow jersey of the leader in the overall classification for four days . He achieved the same premiere feat in the same year at the Giro d'Italia , when he was able to slip over the Maglia Rosa after the second stage on the Etna and after the 9th stage to Giubbio. The year 1989 is therefore considered to be the highlight of his career but also one of Portuguese cycling.
At the Giro d'Italia he won a total of 5 stages. In addition to the 1989 victory, he managed to win two stages in 1985 and 1986. In 1985 he, at that time still known mainly as a mountain flea, won the flat stage from Foggia to Matera in the mass sprint as the mountain prize leader and amazed not only the sprinters, but the entire cycling world.
Although he couldn't win any of the big tours, he made it onto the podium several times. in the top ten of the most famous tours. He finished the Tour de Suisse several times in the top ten and finished second overall in 1984. He also finished second overall in 1985 in the Tirreno Adriatico and the Tour de Romandie. He finished the Giro d'Italia 1986 in seventh place overall.
Acacio Da Silva was an exceptional talent in his generation - outstanding on the mountain and on the field. In practically all tours he did, he wore the jersey of the overall leader, the mountain prize leader or the points leader for at least a few days. In 1984 and 1985 he also won the mountain classification of the Tour de Suisse , in 1985 the mountain classification of the Tour de Romandie as well as the points classification of the Tour de Suisse in 1988 and the sprint classification of the Vuelta a Espagna in 1991.
But he was also extremely successful in one-day races and classics. In 1986 he won both the Zurich Classic Championship and the national road racing championship. In 1984 he was the winner of the Coppa Placci , in 1985 he won the Giro dell'Emilia and the Coppa Agostoni and was fifth in the Monument Liège-Bastogne-Liège . In 1985 he repeated the top ten result as ninth of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège monument and was also fourth in the Flèche Wallone . In 1986 he took 5th and 6th place in the monuments Giro di Lombardia and Clasica San Sebastian .
In the annual ranking "Super Prestige", at that time the world ranking list of road professionals, he took sixth place in 1985 and 1986.
Acacio Da Silva is considered to be the most successful cyclist in Portuguese history , alongside Joaquim Agostinho and Rui Costa .
