Nélson Filipe Oliveira Santos Simoes (born March 6, 1989 in Vilarinho do Bairro ) is a Portuguese road cyclist .

Career

After Oliveira won the silver medal in the individual time trial of the U23 class at the 2009 road world championships in Mendrisio , he joined the Professional Continental Team Xacobeo Galicia in 2010 . In 2010 he repeated his victories at the Portuguese U23 time trial championships of the previous two years.

He received his first contract with a UCI WorldTeam in 2011 with Team RadioShack . This year he took part in a Grand Tour , the Vuelta a España 2011, for the first time and finished the tour in 117th position. In 2011 he became the Portuguese elite time trial champion and repeated this success in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, he was also Portuguese road champion. At the 2012 Summer Olympics , he was 69th in the road race and 18th in the time trial.

His greatest international success to date was celebrated at the Vuelta a España in 2015 , when he was able to break away from a 24-man leading group on the 13th stage 30 km from the finish and won in the time trial style with a lead of over a minute.

In 2016 Oliveira became the Portuguese time trial champion for the fourth time. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he was seventh in the time trial competition. In 2017 he missed bronze at the world championships in the individual time trial by eight seconds and finished fourth. In 2018, the Portuguese finished fifth in the time trial at the World Championships in Innsbruck .
