Vinhais is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 2245 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The place name is derived from a traditionally important activity in the district, viticulture.
history
Archaeological finds and excavations prove a prehistoric settlement of the district area, for example the Castro Ciradelha or the excavation of the Iron Age settlement Castrilhão . The current place was first officially mentioned in the 12th century. In 1253 King D. Afonso III gave him his first town charter ( Foral ), which were renewed by King Manuel I in 1512 .
When in 1384 the entitled to inherit the kingdom of Castile , despite the Portuguese Revolution of 1383 sought to monopolize the neighboring country, hoisted the flag Vinhais Castile and refused the neuproklamierten Portuguese King John I allegiance.
After the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 , Paiva Couceiro occupied Vinhais temporarily in 1911 as part of one of his anti-republican coup attempts.
