Fernando Jorge da Ponte de Lima Barreto (born December 26, 1947 in Vinhais , † July 9, 2011 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese musician and composer .

Life

After Barreto had developed an interest in piano as a child , he later took music lessons parallel to his history-philosophical studies at the University of Porto (graduated in 1973). In 1969 he co-founded the free jazz band Anarband , in which u. a. Rui Reininho was also a member, who later became the singer of the rock and pop band GNR . From 1977 to 1982 Barreto toured South America, on whose musical traditions he was planning a doctoral thesis, and the USA. Through Jean Sarbib he got access to the circles of experimental musicians in New York City, where he turned back to more improvised music. In 1982 he moved to Lisbon and was also involved in the organization of the Festival de Vilar de Mouros 1982. He was also active as a music journalist for various Portuguese newspapers, and he wrote books on the subjects of music, media, communication aesthetics and technology.

In 1982 Barreto founded the free jazz and new improvisation music project Telectu with GNR co-founder Vítor Rua , which released a large number of records. In addition, Barreto wrote on, u. a. Music for theater and film, and about music theory. He also designed radio programs, including a. from 1982 to 1991 the program Musonautas on the radio station Rádio Comercial .

In 1995 Jorge Lima Barreto received his doctorate in musicology and social communication theory at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa .

On July 9, 2011, Jorge Lima Barreto died in a Lisbon hospital as a result of pneumonia .
