Alfândega da Fé is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 2055 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The place is in the Douro Valley, which is known for its wines. Since the 1960s, however, Alfândega has been particularly famous in Portugal for its cherry cultivation.
history
Under Arab rule, the place was an administrative city. In the course of the Reconquista , the site was the scene of battles, and smaller groups of knights maintained bases here. King D Dinis granted the town its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1294 and made it the seat of a district. The king also granted him market rights in 1295 and had the ruined castle originally built by the Moors renewed.
In 1510 King Manuel I renewed the town charter . In the following epochs, the place experienced a continuous decline, which was reflected in a dwindling population. In 1855 the district was dissolved and Moncorvo was incorporated . Alfândega da Fé has been an independent circle again since 1898 .
