Vimioso is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 1285 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Mirandés , the only regional language of Portugal , is still spoken in the two districts of Angueira and Vilar Seco .

history

Archaeological finds prove the prehistoric settlement of the area, including a Castro fortification of the town of Atalaia , from which Vimioso developed , which existed until Roman-Lusitan times . The present place was officially mentioned for the first time in 1187 , when King Sancho I took possession of the local area in order to build a city. The resettlement did not take place until his grandson, King Sancho II .

Vimioso was under the administration of Miranda do Douro until King Manuel I elevated the place to a vila (small town) in 1516 , gave it city rights and made it the seat of a new district of the same name.

Culture and sights

In addition to a few stone fountains and historical public buildings, a number of sacred buildings are among the monuments of the district, including the single-aisled Mannerist parish church Igreja Paroquial de Vimioso (also Igreja de São Vicente ) from the 16th century. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.

Four thematic hiking trails are laid out in the district area.

Vimioso is the seat of a district of the same name that borders Spain in the north . The neighboring districts are (starting clockwise in the north): Miranda do Douro , Mogadouro , Macedo de Cavaleiros and Bragança .

With the regional reform in September 2013 , several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 14 to ten.
