history

In 1062 the place received its first city rights ( Foral ), which were confirmed by King D.Afonso Henriques after the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal ( 1140 ). Records speak of unhealthy conditions, which led to massive emigration of residents, and the neighboring town of Vila Velha de Santa Cruz da Vilariça increased population and in 1225 brought city rights. In 1258 Moncorvo was just a village in the municipality of Santa Cruz da Vilariça, but it had now overcome its disease-causing living conditions. In 1285 King D Dinis transferred the city rights of Vilariça to Moncorvo, which from then on became the seat of an independent district as the Torre de Moncorvo and received fortifications.

In 1512 King Manuel I renewed the town charter .

Culture and sights

The town's architectural monuments include a number of mansions , stone fountains, historical public buildings and sacred buildings , including the three-aisled Renaissance church Igreja Paroquial de Torre de Moncorvo (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção or main church, Igreja Matriz ) built in the 16th century .

The castle was demolished over time. Most recently, in 1815, large quantities of stones were stolen for the renovation and expansion of military facilities on site. Today parts of the walls and three gates in the village are still preserved and are under monument protection. The historic town center as a whole is also protected.

Torre de Moncorvo is the seat of a district of the same name. The neighboring districts are (starting clockwise in the north): Alfândega da Fé , Mogadouro , Freixo de Espada à Cinta , Vila Nova de Foz Côa , Carrazeda de Ansiães and Vila Flor .

With the regional reform in September 2013 , several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 17 to 13.

Torre de Moncorvo caused a national stir in mid-2014 when the members of the city and municipal council decided to forego addressing each other with any existing or appropriate academic titles, such as “Senhor Doutor”. Such forms of address, usually in addition to naming the political office, are common in Portugal and are often tacitly assumed for politicians. This is considered a legacy of the fascist Estado Novo .

The following municipalities ( Freguesias ) are in the Torre de Moncorvo district:
