Isabel Mateus

Isabel Maria Fidalgo Mateus (* 1969 in Quintas do Corisco, Felgueiras e Maçores municipality , Torre de Moncorvo district ) is a Portuguese writer , educator and literary scholar. She has lived in the UK since 2001 .

Some of her works have been translated into English, French and Chinese. Themes of rural life and the diaspora are the main motifs in her numerous publications since 2007. In addition to novels, her work mainly produces stories and fairy tales, some of which are specifically aimed at children and young people.

Life

Mateus was born in a small town in the Alto Douro region, the first protected wine-growing area in the world ( UNESCO World Heritage since 2001 ). The landscapes of the historic Trás-os-Montes region characterize the area, which is still considered to be very remote, rural and structurally weak, but also as particularly traditional and original.

Mateus completed a degree in Romance languages at the University of Évora in the fields of Portuguese and French modern literature and languages. She then taught in secondary schools in Portugal for ten years.

In 2001 she went to the UK University of Birmingham for postgraduate studies with a Ph.D. -Graduation. She then stayed in England, where she taught Portuguese at the Universities of Birmingham and Liverpool. In the city administration ( City Council ) from Stoke-on-Trent , she was also active as a translator while getting to the Portuguese Diaspora know well in England.

After 2007, Mateus gave up her professional activities and has lived in England as a writer and literary scholar ever since.

In 2011 her book O Trigo dos Pardais , a collection of rural stories for children and young people, was included in the Plano Nacional de Leitura , a program of the Portuguese government to promote reading.
