Tuizelo is a town and municipality in north-eastern Portugal .

In the mid-1970s, the French ethnologist Michel Giacometti shot various episodes of his television series Povo que Canta (English: people that sings) for the Portuguese public television broadcaster RTP .

Tuizelo is an integral part of the plot in Yann Martel's novel “The High Mountains of Portugal” from 2016.

history

Finds prove a settlement of the today's municipality area at least since the Castro culture .

The name Tuizelo probably goes back to a local ruler named Teodicellus during the rule of Germanic tribes in the 5th to 7th centuries, possibly under the Suebi .

The current town may have been rebuilt during the Reconquista . In the 13th century it was part of the fortified town of Vinhais.

Tuizelo has remained a parish in Vinhais County to this day.

Tuizelo is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vinhais , in the Bragança district . 387 inhabitants live here on an area of ​​31 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
