Vasile Suciu

Vasile Suciu (born January 13, 1873 in Copăcel , Fogarasch County , Transylvania , † January 25, 1935 in Blaj , Romania ) was Romanian Greek Catholic Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia .

Life

Vasile Suciu came from a farming family and attended elementary school in his hometown and the high school in Blaj . For his outstanding achievements in mathematics , he received a scholarship to study engineering at the Technical University of Budapest . But the call to the priesthood was stronger. He went to study theology at the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome with subsequent studies at the Pontifical Urban University ; there received his doctorate in theology. He was ordained a priest on July 14, 1895 . In 1900 he became a professor at the Theological Institute in Blaj. He became prefect and librarian of the archbishopric library. In January 1918 he became a member of the cathedral chapter and vicar general of the archbishopric.

On August 9, 1919, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . to the Archbishop of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia. He was consecrated and enthroned on January 14, 1920 in Blaj Cathedral . He was the first metropolitan of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church in the United Kingdom of Romania under King Ferdinand I of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .

His special concern was the training of young women. To this end, he founded the Congregaţia Surorilor Maicii Domnului (Congregation of the Sisters of the Mother of God) and built high schools for girls, which the sisters took over.

He died on January 25, 1935 and was buried in the crypt of Blaj Cathedral.
