Vale de Janeiro is a place and a former municipality in northeastern Portugal , in the Trás-os-Montes region .

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, in particular the Iron Age excavation sites of fortified settlements of the Castro culture , such as Castelo de Vale de Janeiro at the pilgrimage church Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde , and Castro Mau at the Fragas Amarelas waterfalls , on the right bank of the Tuela .

The present-day village was probably created during the Reconquista and has been documented as an independent municipality since the independent Kingdom of Portugal was founded in 1139.

In the course of the regional reform in 2013 , the municipality of Vale de Janeiro was dissolved and merged with Curopos to form the new municipality of UF Curopos e Vale de Janeiro .

Vale de Janeiro was a municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vinhais , in the district of Bragança . The community had an area of ​​14.98 km² and had 101 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal in 2013 , the municipalities of Vale de Janeiro and Curopos were merged on September 29, 2013 to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Curopos e Vale de Janeiro . The seat of the new municipality was Curopos.
