Vale de Janeiro is a place and a former municipality in northeastern Portugal , in the Trás-os-Montes region .
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, in particular the Iron Age excavation sites of fortified settlements of the Castro culture , such as Castelo de Vale de Janeiro at the pilgrimage church Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde , and Castro Mau at the Fragas Amarelas waterfalls , on the right bank of the Tuela .
The present-day village was probably created during the Reconquista and has been documented as an independent municipality since the independent Kingdom of Portugal was founded in 1139.
