The Großerzbistum Fagaras and Alba Iulia ( lat. : Archidioecesis Fagarasiensis et Albae Iuliensis Romenorum , rum. : Arhieparhia Greco-Catolica de Alba Iulia şi Făgăraş ) is in Romania located Großerzbistum the Romanian Greek Catholic Church based in Blaj .

history

The diocese Făgăraş was on May 18, 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. established with the Apostolic Constitution Rationi congruit . On November 16, 1854, the Archdiocese of Făgăraş by Pope Pius IX. renamed with the Apostolic Constitution Ecclesiam Christi in Archdiocese of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia . The Archdiocese of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia was on December 16, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. raised with the Apostolic Constitution Ad totius Dominici to the Grand Archbishopric.

On May 29, 2014, the Eparchy of Saint Basil the Great in Bucharest was established from parts of the Grand Archbishopric and the previous auxiliary bishop in Făgăraş and Alba Iulia, Mihai Frățilă , was appointed first bishop.

The Grand Archbishop of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia is the head of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church.
