The Eparchy of Maramureş ( lat. : Dioecesis Maramuresensis , rum. : Eparhia de Maramureş ) is in Romania located Diocese of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church based in Baia Mare . It extends over parts of the Județe Maramureș , Sathmar , Sălaj and Suceava , along the Romanian- Ukrainian border.
history
At the time of the founding of the diocese of Großwardein in 1777, a separate diocese was also to emerge in the area around Maramureș ( German : Maramuresch ). But this did not happen. Only with the conclusion of the Concordat between the Holy See and Romania was the diocese of Maramureș on June 5, 1930 by Pope Pius XI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Solemni Conventione from cessions of territory of the Diocese of Greater Oradea and the Diocese of Gherla and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Făgăraş as a suffragan diocese.
On August 15, 1930, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin in Baia Mare ( German : Frauenbach ) was elevated to a cathedral and appointed apostolic administrator until the election of a bishop Iuliu Hossu , the bishop of Cluj-Gherla .
On October 16, 1930, Alexandru Rusu was elected first bishop of the Maramureș diocese.
