history
The Leuchtenburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1490 . In 1677 the castle and the surrounding area were burned down by the Tatars , and a large part of the population was able to flee. According to historical data, in 1717 almost the entire population, which consisted mainly of Hungarians, was massacred or enslaved. Later Romanians settled. In 1952 the population was 5056 people, who were roughly equal parts Romanians and Hungarians. Many of the Sathmar Swabians living here have called themselves Hungarians, the assimilation process was much more intense here than in the Banat in south-western Romania.
The castle ruins that still exist today are worth seeing .
