Borşa ( Hungarian Borsa , German Borscha ) is a city in the Maramureş district . The place is located in the valley of the Vișeu River at the foot of the Rodna Mountains in northern Romania .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1335. A wooden church built in 1718 is known. The inhabitants live mainly from mining, wood processing and animal husbandry. Another source of income is winter sports.
In March 2000, five weeks after the Baia Mare dam burst , 22,000 tons of heavy metal-contaminated mining residues from a clarifier in the Borșa gold mine entered the adjacent Vaser stream. From there, the poison entered the Vişeu river.
