Baia Sprie ( German Mittelstadt , Hungarian Felsőbánya ) is a town in Maramureș County in Romania .
,location
Baia Sprie is located on the upper reaches of the Săsar - a left tributary of the Lăpuș - in the foothills of the Gutâi Mountains . The district capital Baia Mare is about 8 km to the west.
history
Baia Sprie was first mentioned in a document in 1329 under the Hungarian King Charles I with the Latin name Civitas in medio monte , then in 1360 under the German name Mithelperg . Mining has been documented in the area around the city since 1411 ; which was mainly practiced by German miners. Mainly gold and silver were mined. From 1411 to 1446 the place was owned by the Serbian despots Stefan Lazarević and Đurađ Branković , but remained under Hungarian rule. After the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the city became part of the Principality of Transylvania , which the Ottoman Empire had to pay tribute to . At the end of the 17th century, Baia Sprie came to Austria-Hungary . During these centuries the city was affected several times by incursions by enemy armies and natural events; Turks attacked the place in 1562 , and in 1589 it burned down almost completely. In 1710 a plague epidemic killed 580 people. In 1771 another Turkish invasion followed. In 1780 numerous houses were destroyed by floods; two years later, a plague of locusts destroyed many fields.
After the First World War, Baia Sprie came to Romania, and then back to Hungary from 1940 to 1944 as a result of the Second Vienna Award . Mining, which had a decisive influence on the city for a long time, is only of minor importance. The most important economic sectors in the city today are agriculture , forestry and tourism .
population
The originally at least economically dominant German population was quickly assimilated by the Hungarians . In 1780 there were 3165 inhabitants in Baia Sprie. In 1880 there were 6,881 people living in the area of today's city, of which 2,618 Romanians , 3,865 Hungarians and 54 German . In 2002, 16,609 inhabitants were registered in Baia Sprie, 11,335 of them in the city proper and 5274 in the three cadastral communities. Of the 16,609 people, 12,469 identified themselves as Romanians, 3441 as Hungarians, 576 as Roma , 65 as Germans and 45 as Ukrainians .
traffic
The railway line leading from Baia Mare to Baia Sprie, built in 1904, ceased operations in 1988. The national road Drum național 18 runs through the city from Baia Mare to Sighetu Marmației , which leads northeast of Baia Sprie over the Pasul Gutâi saddle (987 m).
