Vișeu de Sus ( German Oberwischau , Hungarian Felsővisó , Yiddish Ojberwischo ) is a place in northern Romania in the Maramureș district . The municipality, raised in 1956, lies at the confluence of the eponymous river Vişeu with the Vaser . In addition to the city in the narrower sense, it also includes the village of Vișeu de Mijloc . in 2002 Vișeu de Sus had 15,944 inhabitants, Vișeu de Mijloc 3,223. In terms of area, Vișeu de Sus is the second largest city in Romania.

The place is best known for the Carpathian Forest Railway ( Wassertalbahn ), which runs from Vișeu de Sus on an approximately 40 km long rail network to the Ukrainian border.

Geography and weather

Vișeu de Sus is 427 meters above sea level and covers an area of around 44,000 hectares of land. The climate is continental, with warm summers (the warmest month July with an average of 20 degrees) and cold winters (around 69 days a year there is an average of 15 centimeters of snow).

Vișeu de Sus has already been hit by floods several times. For example, on July 27, 2008, water masses tore away bridges and houses from the city. The Wassertalbahn was also badly affected.

history

Oberwischau was first mentioned in 1362. The first large wave of German-speaking families settled here a good 400 years later. To a large extent, there were initially large families from Gmunden , Bad Ischl and Ebensee in Upper Austria . The Spiš , German settlers from the Spiš in Upper Hungary, today's Slovakia , immigrated between 1796 and 1798 . These immigrants came mainly from Käsmark and Leutschau , but also - outside the Zips - German samples . The Bratislava authorities sent workers from these areas as well as from Pudlein and Altlublau to Oberwischau. A German-speaking minority has survived in the city to this day. For a long time the Zipser lived in their own part of the city, the so-called Zipserei .
