Zipserei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zipserei denotes districts in communities in Eastern Europe .

The name goes back to the emigration of German-speaking colonists from the Zips around 1800 to areas further east. In contrast to the loose construction methods that were traditional in the settlement regions, the Spiš built their houses in a fortress-like row (like the Saxons in Transylvania, for example ). The term “Zipserei” (also “Zipserreih”) is derived from this particular feature of the construction of the Zipser houses in a row. The newly colonized places were each part of existing places or were in their immediate vicinity.

Well-known districts with this name are Cartierul Țipțerai in Vişeu de Sus in northern Romania and a district of Rakhiv in western Ukraine .

A similar design applies to the "Teitschirei", the "German series" in Oberwischau (Vișeu de Sus), which was founded by Upper Austrians (Teitschi) and is located opposite the Zipserei on the other bank of the river.
