The Assumption Cathedral ( Rum. Catedrala Adormirea Maicii Domnului ) was built between 1905 and 1911 as a Greek Catholic parish church in Baia Mare . The church is located at strada Închisă nr. 11, in the center of the town of Baia Mare.

With the establishment of the Maramureș diocese in 1930, the building became a cathedral.

In 1948 the Romanian Uniate Church was banned by the communist regime, the bishops were arrested and the church buildings were transferred to the property of the Romanian Orthodox Church .

Return process

In 2011, the Maramureș court ruled to return the cathedral to the Maramureș diocese . The ruling was the Court of Appeal in 2012 Cluj tilted. In 2013 the Bucharest Court of Cassation ruled again in favor of the Orthodox Church.

In the International Religious Freedom Report, the United States Department of State criticized the judgment of the Cluj Appeal Court in favor of the Orthodox Church.
