The Roman Catholic Church is the second largest denomination in Romania . It consists of 5.4% of the population, i.e. a good 1 million people. In contrast, the Romanian Orthodox Church , to which 86.5% of the population profess, is much larger .

The vast majority of Romanian Catholics (approx. 870,000) are members of the Latin Church , which traditionally has a strong presence among members of the Hungarian population in Transylvania . About 150,000 belong to the Romanian Greek Catholic Church , which arose in the course of the Catholic missionary efforts among the Orthodox population during the Habsburg rule in Transylvania. In addition, the Armenian Catholic Church has several hundred members in the country. All three particular churches are represented in Romania with their own hierarchy. Its bishops are members of the Romanian Bishops' Conference .

The apostolic nuncio has been Miguel Maury Buendía since 2015 .
