The Diocese of Gibraltar ( Latin : Dioecesis Gibraltariensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese and covers the entire British overseas territory of Gibraltar . It is directly subordinate to the Holy See ( immediate ).

history

The area around Gibraltar was part of the diocese of Cádiz and is thus part of the Catholic Church in Spain from its origins , but legally separated from it by the fact that Gibraltar has been part of the British Empire since 1713. The majority of Gibraltar's population remained Catholic. The Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe also operates from Gibraltar, but is responsible for all of continental Europe.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Gibraltar, established in 1816, was elevated to an immediate diocese on November 19, 1910 .

In 2002 the Diocese of Gibraltar had 16 diocesan priests, 1 religious priest and 5 religious sisters in 5 parishes . While the number of women religious in the city is decreasing, the diocese has seen a certain increase in diocesan priests, in the past there were hardly more than ten.

The Marian shrine “Our Lady of Europe” is located in the diocese.
