The Marienkathedrale has an eventful history. In the Moorish times a mosque was built on the site . After the Reconquista, it was initially converted into a church , but then demolished under the Catholic kings Ferdinand and Isabella and replaced by a larger new building around 1500, which forms the core of today's cathedral. The longhouse , however, extended several yokes to the west beyond what is now Main Street .

After Gibraltar came into British possession in 1704, the Spanish crown made the last attempt at recapture with the Great Siege of 1779–1783 . The Church was badly damaged in the process, and the Catholic community, some of which was returning from exile, did not have the means to restore it. The British Governor Robert Boyd finally offered assistance on the condition that the structure was shortened to straighten Main Street can.

During the subsequent restoration, St. Mary the Crowned received the facade and the belfry in the late baroque - classical style. The interior and furnishings were renewed based on the models of the Italian Renaissance .

Under canon law, Gibraltar officially remained part of the Spanish diocese of Cádiz until 1816 ; that year the Holy See established the Vicariate Apostolic Gibraltar . St. Mary's Church became its seat, with the establishment of the Gibraltar Cathedral in 1910.
