Charles Caruana

Charles Caruana (born October 9, 1932 in Gibraltar ; † October 1, 2010 ibid) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar .

Life

Charles Caruana spent the Second World War in London and Northern Ireland, where he was raised by the Christian Brothers . He worked as an officer and in the civil service and entered the seminary in 1953 . On May 24, 1959, he was ordained a priest . His first pastoral assignment was that of an assistant priest in Gibraltar Cathedral . Six years later he was appointed pastor of the Sacred Heart Church. In 1975 he was appointed administrator of the cathedral by the Bishop of Gibraltar, Edward Rapallo . He was a hospital chaplain at the Saint Bernard Hospital for over 12 years and a prison chaplain for over 10 years. Bishop Bernard Patrick Devlin appointed him vicar general ; Pope John Paul II appointed him Monsignor .

In 1998 Charles Caruana was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Gibraltar by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on May 24, 1998 by the Archbishop of Westminster in England, George Basil Cardinal Hume OSB ; Co- consecrators were Michael George Bowen , Archbishop of Southwark, England, and his predecessor, Bernard Patrick Devlin . His motto was Sapientia et amor Dei .

Charles Caruana was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 1998 . From 1998 to 2010 he was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, founded in 1985 as a magistral delegation.

He was the Chaplain Commander (CStJ) of the Order of Saint John . In 2008 he was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II . In March 2010, his age-related resignation was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI. granted. In the same year he died of a fall in Gibraltar. He was buried in the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned of Gibraltar.

Charles Caruana also worked intensively with the young Christian labor movement (Movimiento de Trabajadores Jóvenes Cristianos) . Together with Edward Rapallo he founded the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement in Gibraltar (Movimiento de Renovación Carismática Católica de Gibraltar) .
