Bernard Patrick Devlin

Bernard Patrick Devlin (born March 10, 1921 in Youghal , Irish Republic , † December 15, 2010 in Gibraltar ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar .

Life

Bernard Patrick Devlin attended from 1927 in the Loreto Convent in Youghal in 1927 and from 1933 a school of the Christian Brothers . After graduating from Cistercian College Dublin in 1939, he studied at the Pontifical Beda College in Liverpool. He received in the Dec. 9, 1945 Portsmouth Cathedral , the ordination . From June 22, 1946 he worked in Gibraltar, from 1974 as pastor of the parish of St. Theresa and from 1975 as vicar general in Gibraltar.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Gibraltar on October 20, 1984 . The Pope himself donated him episcopal ordination on January 6, 1985 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome ; Co-consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo , substitute for the State Secretariat , and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

On February 14, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died on December 15, 2010 and was buried on December 17 of the same year in the crypt of St. Mary the Crowned Cathedral in Gibraltar.

Devlin was invested in the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned on March 30, 1985 as Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He was a Knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George .
