Pontifical Beda College

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pontifical Beda College ( Italian : Pontificio Collegio Beda ) in Rome is a Pontifical College for international English-speaking priests and seminarians . It was founded in 1852 by Pope Pius IX. (1846–1878) and bears the name of the Doctor of the Church Beda Venerabilis .

history

At the end of the 18th century, priests and candidates for the priesthood of the Anglican Church in England had decided to convert to the Roman Catholic Church and wanted to be ordained priestly by the Catholic Church. This fact prompted Pius IX to found a papal college for converts in Rome. The college was opened in 1807. The first name was “Collegio Ecclesiastico”, later it was renamed “Collegio Pio”. Pope Leo XIII. (1878–1903) introduced a new period for the college and in 1898 approved the new college statutes . He decided that the college should be placed under the patronage of Saint Bede, whom he had appointed Doctor of the Church, and that it should be titled as the "Pontifical Beda College".

In the years 1930–1940, Rector Monsignor Charles Duchemin developed a four-year course that was conducted in English. Between 1939 and 1947 the college was evacuated to Great Britain . On their return they moved into a building in Via di S.Nicolo da Tolentino in Piazza Barberini . Since the premises had become too small in the mid-1950s, they were looking for a new home. 1956 gave Pope Pius XII. (1939-1958) the college from the Vatican owned a piece of land near the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls . On October 20, 1960, Pope John XXIII opened (1958–1963) the new college building at Viale San Paolo 18, it is located on an extra-territorial enclave .
