Carmelo Zammit (born December 19, 1949 in Gudja , Malta ) is a Maltese clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar .
Life
Carmelo Zammit received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Malta on July 20, 1974 . From 1967 to 1974 he studied philosophy, Italian and economics at the University of Malta , then theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. From 1974 to 1976 he completed a degree in canon law.
Between 1976 and 1998 he worked in the Diocese of Gibraltar, where he was appointed Vicar of Justice. Between 1976 and 1987 he was chaplain for the boys and girls at the schools in Gibraltar. From 1985 to 1998 he was pastor of two parishes in Gibraltar and delegate of the bishop in the religious education committee for state schools, later prison chaplain and member of the prison board.
On his return to Malta in 1998, he became chancellor of the Archdiocese of Malta and judge of the ecclesiastical court of the Archbishopric. In 1997 he was made an honorary papal prelate . In 2005 he became canon of the metropolitan chapter and in 2010 chairman of the cathedral chapter .
On June 24, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Gibraltar. The Archbishop of Westminster , Vincent Cardinal Nichols , ordained him episcopal on September 8 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Malta, Charles Scicluna , and his predecessor, the Bishop of Hallam , Ralph Heskett CSsR . The inauguration in the Diocese of Gibraltar took place on September 24, 2016.
In 2017 Carmelo Zammit was appointed Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, founded in 1985 as a magistral delegation. On November 18, 2017, the inauguration was carried out by Edwin Frederick O'Brien , Grand Master of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
