Charles Jude Scicluna (born May 15, 1959 in Toronto , Canada ) is a Maltese clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Malta .

Life

Charles Scicluna, born in Toronto to Maltese parents, came to Malta at the age of 11 months. After studying philosophy and theology at the seminary , he was in 1983 with a thesis on foundations, donations and legacies in favor of the Dead Hand ( The Mortmain Act, 1967. Its genesis and interpretation ) at the University of Malta to Dr. iur. PhD. The Archbishop of Malta, Joseph Mercieca , ordained him on July 11, 1986 . At the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , he completed a doctoral degree in canon law from 1991 and in 1992, with a doctoral thesis supervised by Raymond Leo Burke , on The Basic Definition of Marriage according to the Codices of Canon Law of 1917 and 1983. An exegetical and comparative study to the Dr. iur. can. PhD . He then worked at the Metropolitan Court in Malta and was also professor of pastoral theology and canon law at the theological faculty of the University of Malta and Subregens of the diocesan seminary. He was also active in pastoral care, including in Lija .

Since 1995 he has worked for the Holy See , in particular for the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on October 24, 1996 . In addition, he was a professor at the Gregorian Faculty of Law. He had been Promoter Iustitiae in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since October 21, 2002, and in this capacity he dealt with particularly serious crimes ( delicta graviora ) in the Church, such as the cases of sexual assault by clergy against minors. In January 2005, the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger , commissioned him to investigate the allegations of pedophilia against Father Marcial Maciel .

He was instrumental in the 2007 canonization of George Preca , a Maltese priest and religious founder .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on October 6, 2012 Titular Bishop of San Leone and Auxiliary Bishop in Malta. The Archbishop of Malta , Paul Cremona OP , donated him episcopal ordination on November 24, 2012 ; Co- consecrators were Mario Grech , Bishop of Gozo , and Archbishop Tommaso Caputo , Apostolic Nuncio in Malta and Libya .

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Malta on February 27, 2015. Previously, he had been Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese since the resignation of his predecessor Paul Cremona OP on October 18, 2014 . The inauguration as Archbishop took place on March 21, 2015.

In February 2018, Pope Francis commissioned him to conduct a detailed investigation into allegations of sexual abuse in the Chilean Church. For his more than 2,300-page report, he collected 64 testimony.

On November 13, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith while retaining his office as Archbishop of Malta .
