Mario Grech (born February 20, 1957 in Qala on Gozo ) is a Maltese clergyman, Roman Catholic bishop and Pro-General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops .

Life

Mario Grech entered the Gozo seminary in 1977 and studied philosophy and later theology. He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1984 by the Bishop of Gozo, Nikol Joseph Cauchi . Grech graduated from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome with a degree in canon law and civil law . He received his doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas . In addition to his pastoral work in the parish of the Assumption of Mary in Rome, he worked in the field of canon law in the courts of the Roman Curia. After his return to Malta, Grech initially worked in the pastoral diocesan curia, from 1993 vicar at the diocesan court in Gozo, judge at the church tribunal in Malta and pastor in Kerċem .

On November 26, 2005, Mario Grech was born by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Bishop of Gozo . The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor Nikol Joseph Cauchi on 22 January of the following year. Co- consecrators were Joseph Mercieca , Archbishop of Malta , and Archbishop Félix del Blanco Prieto , Apostolic Nuncio in Malta.

Pope Francis appointed him Pro-General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops on October 2, 2019 . He administered the Diocese of Gozo as Apostolic Administrator until his successor was appointed in June 2020 .

On July 4, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity .
