Nikol Joseph Cauchi (born March 2, 1929 in Għarb , Gozo , † November 15, 2010 in Msida ) was a Maltese university professor , Roman Catholic theologian and Bishop of Gozo .

Life

Nikol Cauchi attended the Gozo Lyceum and later studied at the Diocesan Seminary in Victoria . He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1952 . At the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he completed a doctorate in philosophy and a licentiate in social sciences at the Jesuit Institute for Sociology in Rome . In 1956 he became a pastor in Fontana and also taught philosophy and sociology as a professor as well as Italian at the seminary in Gozo. In 1963 he became Prefect of the Gozo Seminary.

Pope Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Vicus Augusti in 1967 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Gozo and apostolic administrator "sede plena" . He was ordained bishop on April 9, 1967 in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Victoria Archbishop Martin John O'Connor , Apostolic Nuncio in Malta; Co- consecrators were Salvatore Nicolosi , Bishop of Lipari in Italy, and Francesco Ricceri , Former Bishop of Trapani in Sicily . In 1972 he was appointed bishop of the Maltese diocese of Gozo , which had existed since 1864 .

In 2005 Pope Benedict XVI. retired for reasons of age and appointed Pastor Mario Grech as his successor. Cauchi died after complications related to pneumonia and heart failure at the Mater Dei Hospital in Msida, Malta. He was buried in the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (Santa Marija) in Victoria.

Act

Cauchi was one of the founding members of the Social Action Movement in Gozo. He was also a "moral advisor" to the Cana Movement and later its spiritual. He was also involved in the Gozo Civic Council . Between 1974 and 1994 he was a representative of the Maltese Bishops' Conference in the Synod of Bishops. He was the dean and canon of St. Georges Basilica in Victoria. In 2005 he became an honorary member of the Ix-Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika , one of the highest honors in Malta. In 2007 Cauchi was invested in the Sovereign Order of Malta . He was a founding member and Honorary President of the JP2 Foundation .
