Kerċem [ ˈkɛrt͡ʃɛm ] (officially: Ta 'Kerċem, English: Kerchem) is a municipality in the western part of the island of Gozo in the Republic of Malta . It has 1796 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).

The place is two kilometers west of Gozo's capital Victoria . Furthermore, it borders on Kerċem in the west San Lawrenz , in the northwest Għarb , in the north Għasri , in the southeast Fontana and in the south Munxar . In the southwest the municipality borders on the Mediterranean Sea.

history

Archaeological finds show that the Kerċem area dates back to 5000–4500 BC. Was settled. Other finds testify to Roman baths and an early Christian cemetery - both of which are not open to the public. In the Middle Ages, the place developed into a community around a chapel in honor of Gregory the Great . The parish church from 1851, expanded between 1906–1910, is also dedicated to Gregory the Great.
