Paul Cremona OP ( paints. Pawlu Cremona ; born January 25, 1946 in Valletta ) is a Maltese religious and retired Archbishop of Malta .

Life

Paul Cremona visited the Montesseori School in Valletta and the Lyceum in Ħamrun and entered in 1962 the Congregation of the Dominicans at. He made his profession on September 29, 1963 . He studied philosophy and theology at the religious college of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rabat . The Archbishop of Malta , Michael Gonzi , ordained him on March 22, 1969 . In Rome he studied moral theology and in 1973 at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas with a thesis on the peace concept of Pope John XXIII. PhD in Theology (STD).

Cremona was Prior of the Dominican Monastery of Our Lady of the Grotto in Rabat from 1974 to 1980 and 1997 to 2003 and Provincial of the Order in Malta from 1981 to 1989. From 1989 to 1993 he was pastor in Gwardamanġa in Pietà and from 2005 to 2006 pastor in Sliema . He held various offices in the diocesan administration in Malta. Among other things , he was a delegate for the consecrated life, spiritual at the seminary of Tal-Virtù in Rabat, member of the priestly council and president of the Council of Maltese Religious Major Superiors (KSMR).

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on December 2, 2006 Archbishop of Malta. The old archbishop of Malta, Joseph Mercieca , donated him episcopal ordination on January 26 of the next year ; Co-consecrators were Félix del Blanco Prieto , Apostolic Nuncio in Malta and Libya , and George Anthony Frendo OP, Auxiliary Bishop in Tirana-Durrës . As a motto he chose Hejju t-triq ghall-mulejj ("Prepare the way for the Lord").

Since 2007 he has been Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Malta.

On October 18, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his resignation for health reasons. Archbishop Cremona has long been criticized for not running his diocese properly. The church therefore advised him to resign.
