George Anthony Frendo OP (born April 4, 1946 in Qormi , Malta ) is a Maltese religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tirana-Durrës in Albania .

Life

George Frendo entered the Dominican monastery of Our Lady of Grotto in Rabat (Malta) in 1962 ; He completed his theological studies there at the order's own university. He was ordained a priest on April 7, 1969 . Frendo then studied in Rome at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Canon Law and in 1973 after making a dissertation on the topic Unaufflöslichkeit and divorce in the theology of the scholastics of the 13th century to Dr. iur. can. PhD .

In the following decades he held various offices in the Maltese province of his order: he was novice master , prior of a convent, parish priest , judge at various ecclesiastical courts and from 1989 to 1997 provincial superior .

Immediately after the end of his tenure as Prior of the Maltese Dominican Province, Frendo went to Albania as a missionary and established the first settlement of his order in the Balkans in Tirana . The Albanian Bishops' Conference entrusted him with the development of supplementary norms for canon law, which should be tailored to the special circumstances of the Catholic Church in Albania. After fulfilling this task, Frendo was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Tirana-Durrës in 1998 . In the following year, the Maltese was also elected President of the Conference of Major Superiors in Albania , who is responsible for coordinating the work of the various orders operating in the country. From 2001 to 2006 Father Frendo also represented Albania in the Union of European Conferences of Major Superiors .

On July 7, 2006, George Frendo was received by Pope Benedict XVI. Appointed titular bishop of Buthrotum and auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Tirana-Durrës. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Rrok Mirdita on 23 September of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Albania, Archbishop John Bulaitis , and the Archbishop of Malta , Joseph Mercieca .

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Tirana-Durrës on November 17, 2016. The inauguration took place on December 3 of the same year. On July 8, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .
