Rrok Mirdita

Rrok Kola Mirdita (born September 28, 1939 in Klezna , Montenegro , † December 7, 2015 in Tirana ) was Archbishop of Tirana-Durrës , Primate of the Catholic Church in Albania and Chairman of the Albanian Bishops' Conference .

Life

Mirdita was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Archdiocese of New York on July 2, 1965 by the Archbishop of Bar , Aleksandar Tokic . For many years he was pastor of the Albanian congregation in the New York Bronx .

On December 25, 1992 he was appointed Archbishop of Tirana-Durrës by Pope John Paul II . During his trip to Albania , the Pope personally donated Mirdita her episcopal ordination on April 25, 1993 ; Co-consecrators were the cardinals Camillo Ruini and Jozef Tomko .

In his episcopal city of Tirana, Mirdata initiated the construction of a new cathedral dedicated to the Apostle Paul. The St. Paul Cathedral was inaugurated in January of 2002. Right next to it is the also newly built archbishop's residence. Rrok Mirdita was also the director of the Albanian Caritas .

Rrok Mirdita died on December 7, 2015 of complications from a stroke.
